Catching up with the 2011 MXY2 Champion – Ryan Houghton

ryan-houghton

It’s pretty safe to say that the MXY2 group of the Maxxis British Motocross championship will be the guys of the future and the ones the crowds will be shouting for along the track fence.

The larger teams within the UK have already secured their future riders and none much bigger than HM Plant Red Bull KTM UK. Team principle Roger Magee must have seen something special when he signed young Ryan Houghton who this week handed the MXY2 championship to the teams list of accomplishments.

We managed to catch up with a happy Ryan straight after Duns where he walked away with the title.

Well Ryan, how does it feel to be the MXY2 Maxxis British champion???

Its absolutely fantastic, all the hard work has finally paid off. Its been a stressful season with so much bad luck you would not believe, but its done! All part of racing……..

You didn’t make it easy on yourself this weekend; can you tell us what happened in race 1??

I got all the preparation done, As i sat on the start line I looked down and saw oil dripping from the overflow in the engine, what a mare!!!! I had no choice but to race. I managed to nurse the bike round but I had to keep pulling into the mechanics area to top up oil. The bike was so hot and losing power, but i managed to pick up two valuable points.

Although you secured the championship this weekend you’ve got to say that it’s been your consistency that’s won it. What have you done different this season to stay consistent ??

Nothing different really, I’ve always worked on consistency, I try to do my pushing on practice days and ride in my zone on race days. I think everyone needs a little luck and this year I haven’t had much, (laughing) I would like to of had more overall wins but consistency has won me the championship so I’m happy.

Milton Park saw you take your first overall win, how did that feel looking down on James Dunn and Jordan Divall??

James and Jordan are good riders, when you get to this level I think all the front runners have a healthy respect for each other but you can never beat the feeling of a win.

How did you celebrate winning the championship and what did Roger Magee have to say??

Celebrations to me is about sharing the win with all those who put so much effort in. Roger was really happy for me and had plenty of compliments to say.

Who has been your toughest competitor this year??

The European EMX125 series is so tough and i would have to say Samuele Bernerdini or Zecchina, those boys can ride a bike!

I think its safe to say you’ve probably got the strongest group of team mates in the whole paddock, which of the team has helped or given you the most advise??

You know what, all the team have been very supportive as I’m the new guy, but Jake has helped me a lot this year with my riding. Ive ridden with him at his track and stayed with him and blu in Belgium. I learnt a lot and laughed a lot.

So what’s next for Ryan Houghton??

I have a couple of EMX 125 European races left and then hopefully onto the maxxis in the mx2 class . I think I will be off for a well earned holiday, then into winter training.

Ryan, its been a pleasure speaking with you and we would like to thank you for your time. Is there anyone you would like to thank for the season so far??

Firstly my mum dad and brothers jamie and lewi. My mechanic chris barker and pammy, Mark Huck, Stu Flockhart, Dave T, Neal Turner, Jake and Blu, James laura and gurnstar. HM PLANT RED BULL KTM TEAM, AGV, GAERNE, RNR, FOX, CTI, DOODSONS and TILLET SUSPENSION.

Good luck for your future racing Ryan and have fun, Thanks again

Thanks dude, RYAN #119
