2 Stroke Open Championship Decided – RBPN

mat-MOFFAT

The 2 Stroke Championship has served up some of the best racing we’ve seen this season and the title will be decided this weekend. After 6 rounds Stu Edmonds and Matt Moffat are separated by a mere two points, so there is everything to play for here at Culham.

As the gate drops on the first moto neither championship contender gets the drop as Dan Thornhill, Ashley Thomas and Josh Waterman head up the start straight covering the first three positions, with Moffat in fourth and Edmonds having a shocker way back in 9th. By the 2nd lap Moffat has muscled his way up into second and begins to try clawing his way back to Waterman who is out front and riding like a man possessed! Further back Edmonds is having a bit of a mare, circulating 2 seconds slower than the leaders, but, knowing that the championship is on the line gets his head down and starts picking off riders, eventually moving into third on the eighth lap. Moffat knows that he needs every point available and with three laps to go tries to close down on Waterman, but it’s a little too much a little too late as he gets balked by a backmarker on the last lap, leaving Waterman to take his maiden victory of the season.

In the Junior class Jordan Moyle took top honors, being the only junior finishing on the same lap as the leaders, with Jason Martin second and Christian Lyth in third.

In the second moto it’s Josh Waterman grabbing the holeshot, with Moffat and Edmonds slotting in behind him as they round the first few corners. Moffat immediately starts to put the pressure on and a small mistake allows Moffat to slip past Waterman for the lead as the pair of them start to distance themselves from Edmonds. If Moffat thinks that he has it in the bag then he’s wrong, as Waterman regroups and quickly closes up onto his rear fender. With any challenge from Edmonds long gone, Waterman makes his move on Moffat to reclaim the lead, where he happily stays to claim his second win of the day.

In the Juniors, series champ Jason Martin keeps it on two wheels to take his first win of the day, with Christian Lyth in second making for a TM 1-2. Third place on the box is Tim Burrows who improves from his first race 4th.

With both Matt Moffat and Stu Edmonds both needing a win it was Moffat with the cat like reflexes as he grabbed his first holeshot of the day and led the field into turn one with Edmonds back in fifth. Seeing his title aspirations slipping away Edmonds got on the gas but unfortunately a mistake saw him drop the bike and a few positions as Moffat pulled away at the front By mid distance Edmonds had started to get things together and moved himself up into third and with Josh Waterman relieving Moffat of the lead the championship was as tight as a banjo string! Unfortunately for Edmonds his earlier spill had left him with too much of a mountain to climb and with Moffat finishing in second spot behind Waterman the Championship was his.

Josh Waterman

“I haven’t actually been on my 2 stroke for six months and in qualifying it was just like riding a new bike, but then once I got used to it I did okay and came away with three wins so I was happy with that. I was third off the start in the first one, holeshot the second, then in the third Carlton Husband came across me and messed my start up, so I just picked them off one at a time, got to Matt, got by him and got the win and the overall, so I’m happy with that!”

Matt Moffat

“It feels good, I’m over the moon to have won the Championship. I had a bit of bad luck at Desertmartin and was really disappointed with myself, I knew it was going to be tight coming here and I thought Stuart would have rode a lot better here but I think he just had some bad luck, stuff didn’t go his way and I managed to get out of the start and keep clear. Josh rode really good all day, it was nice having him here and I think if the Championship hadn’t been on the line then I think I might have been able to have a better go at him, but I just used my head on the last few laps and did what I needed to do.”

Stu Edmonds

“I had a bad day and in fairness I had nothing for Matt and Josh today, they rode really, really well. I tried my best and that’s all I could do really. I’ve enjoyed the whole year racing with Matt, it’s been good clean riding and I’ve enjoyed it really. I’m already looking forward to next year if we do it and hopefully I can take it from him. In the first two races I wasn’t feeling the best but in the last race there I felt the best I could, but I made the mistake, I hit neutral in one of the corners and went down. I pushed as hard as I could, I couldn’t say it was my favourite track but I tried my hardest and that’s all I could really do. It’s been a good year and a good weekend.”

In the Junior class Jordan Moyle took his second win of the day and despite his fourth place finish in the second moto still took the overall. Christian Lyth backed up his earlier results with another second spot, giving him third overall and Jason Martin finished in third to give him second overall on the day, just a single point behind Moyle.

Jordan Moyle

“The first race was pretty good I felt alright, in the second race I had a big crash in the whoops which set me back a bit and I came fourth so I thought any chance of the overall was over. It’s only my second round this year so I was just hoping for the win in the third and in the last race I just did enough to get it, so I was happy with that. I’ve only done two nationals this year so I really wasn’t used to a track as rough as that so it’s really done me, saying that I really enjoyed it though!”
